Project 17A: The Stealth Backbone

Project 17A or the Nilgiri-class is India's most ambitious frigate project, utilizing modular construction to build seven state-of-the-art stealth ships.

6,670 T Displacement
149 M Length
Modular Construction

Project 17A represents a significant leap from the Shivalik-class (Project 17) frigates. These ships are built using "Integrated Modular Construction," a technique where large hull blocks are pre-assembled and then integrated, significantly reducing construction time.

Cutting-Edge Features

The Nilgiri-class is designed with a high level of indigenous content and specialized air-defense modules.

  • Reduced Signature: Better deck-lines and X-form structure to ensure minimal radar echo.
  • Barak-8 & BrahMos: The dual punch of Indo-Israeli Barak-8 SAM and supersonic BrahMos cruise missiles.
  • Indigenous Integrated Combat System: A sophisticated command-and-control brain developed for Indian Navy requirements.

Seven Hulls, Two Yards

To accelerate production, the Indian Navy split the contract between Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) and Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE).

MDL Ships

Nilgiri, Himgiri, Taragiri, Udaygiri

GRSE Ships

Dunagiri, Vindhyagiri, Mahendragiri

Combat Management System (CMS)

The Project 17A frigates feature an advanced CMS-17A, which integrates all sensors and weapon systems on board, providing a real-time battle-space awareness. The ships also host a large flight deck to carry two multi-role helicopters (MH-60R or Sea King).
